March 3 was our provincial election, and I have this to say...
I am so deeply disappointed. Are there really 52.7% of us that wish to be ruled by the rightest wing, pollution-happy, money-grubbing corporate- and American-ass-kissing worst of the worst? I seriously doubt it.
Yes, our government constantly disappoints us. But why? Because we let them! Because we, the ones who scream that we want change, don't get off our asses to VOTE. We can't expect a government that represents us if we don't cast our vote showing what we want represented. If we continue letting the old fogies speak for us, and sit there and complain that politicians aren't honest...then get off your damn ass and cast your vote for the few who ARE! They are out there....unknown... because those who say they care, don't get out and cast a vote for them.
Yes, there is a lot of negativity in politics. Unfortunately this seems to be what people respond to. Maybe it isn't optimal, but what is? Is it better then to sit at home and let everyone else vote for the assholes? And then complain about the escalating negativity? Once good politicians are voted in, they can help steer the government in ways that we elected them for...to conserve the environment, to save our social programs, to fund education and child care. It is by voting in real people that care, that this happens.
Not all politicians are evil. Four years ago, my friend's mom ran for the NDP... She is an amazing woman, and would have made an amazing difference if she had made it. Unfortunately, people seem to think that casting a vote for the left wing is a throw away vote. When truly, if everyone voted as they really felt instead of thinking they are throwing their vote away, or voting "against who they don't want in", things would turn out a lot differently.
NDP is in favour of electoral reform. In some countries, instead of choosing one person or party, you vote the order you prefer, and then votes are calculated much differently. This has been proven to better represent what the people really want. But as long as the big parties keep getting voted in this won't happen. Why would they want to ruin what is working for them?
So now what? Now we have elected ourselves to be mini-america. Sure! Let's let the Conservatives have more secret meetings about the Security and Prosperity Partnership with the American and Mexican governments. We obviously have forgotten that this is our country that we need to fight for. As we seem to have also forgotten that it's our right to vote, and take part in our country, to make our voices heard.
I am thoroughly disappointed and disgusted with everyone who made the choice to damn us with another four years of Conservative rule. Another four years of polluting northern Alberta to the fullest extent...and we know that when it comes to environment, we DON'T have that kind of time! My heart is breaking, and my stomach sinks when I think of how we have failed this time around. I really had so much more hope for this election. I thought the young people would stand up and say, `We aren`t going to take this anymore!`.
But no. Instead, they stayed home.
What will it take for people to speak up and stand up? We can`t let our civil liberties slip away like the americans have, but that`s exactly what we have done. I can`t help but to be a little afraid. Why are we letting this happen?
